Ducklings (first steps)

For 3 & 4 year olds who are new to swimming lessons

Aims

  • The foundation of water safety
  • To enter and exit the water safely
  • Floatation without adult support
  • Kick 5m with a float
  • Submerge completely
  • Jump into water

Awards: Duckling 1 to 4 Certificates

Turtles (beginners)

For new swimmers aged 5 – 7 who are not yet water confident e.g. unable to float, not willing to submerge their face

Aims

  • The foundation of water safety
  • To enter and exit the water safely
  • Floatation on front & back
  • Move forward, sideways & backwards for 5m with aids

Awards: Ducklings certificates and Learn to Swim Stage 1

Penguins (developing)

For children aged 5+ who are confident in the water, can submerge their face and can paddle a short distance unaided

Aims

  • To travel for a distance of 5 metres forwards and backwards without aids
  • Floatation without support
  • Submerge face and blow bubbles
  • Push and glide
  • Basic movement skills

Awards: Ducklings certificates and Learn to Swim Stage 1

Sealions (improving)

For children who have mastered the Developing course, or who can travel 5m without the use of buoyancy aids

Aims

  • Push and glide and swim 10m any stroke
  • Kick 10m front crawl (with 1 item of equipment)
  • Kick 10m back stroke (with 1 item of equipment)
  • Kick 10m butterflyKick 10m breast stroke (with 1 item of equipment)
  • To fully submerge and pick up an object in the water
  • To perform a sequence of changing shapes whilst floating on the surface
  • Perform a log roll on front & back

Awards: Learn to Swim Stage 3 & 4 - 10m badge

Dolphins (confident)

For children who can swim at least 10m of one stroke with good technique

Aims

  • Push and glide and swim 10m any stroke
  • Push and glide and swim 10m back stroke
  • Push and glide and swim 10m breast stroke
  • Push and glide and swim 10m butterfly
  • Push and glide and swim 10m front crawl
  • To perform a forward somersault
  • To tread water for 30 seconds
  • To swim 10 metres wearing clothes
  • To perform a movement sequence
  • Push, glide and swim 25m back stroke
  • Push, glide and swim 25m breast stroke
  • Push, glide and swim 25m butterfly
  • Push, glide and swim 25m front crawl
  • Swim 50m any stroke
  • Swim 100m any stroke
